2017 Lamar Holiday Basketball Tournament Brackets Revealed
The 54th Annual Lamar Chamber of Commerce Holiday Basketball Tournament will commence at the Lamar Community Building on Thursday, December 14 and run through Saturday, December 16. Tournament directors Chad DeBono and Sean Oquist will once again oversee one of Southeast Colorado’s finest traditions. The event kicks off with four girls games followed by four boys games. Then on Friday and Saturday, the games will be played in alternating order.
One of the great traditions of the tournament is the announcement of the Melvin Hendrickson Award, which has been given since 1980 to honor the memory of Melvin, whose presence was always felt at the tournament with his wonderful enthusiastic spirit as he volunteered for many tasks. The Melvin Hendrickson Award honors the memory of Melvin, who was an example of sportsmanship, determination, and one who had an unconditional love for the athletes, competitors and the game of game of basketball. The award is normally announced in a matter that the recipient and everyone else involved in the tournament has no idea who the recipient is until he/she is announced. But this year, DeBono and Oquist have already announced the 2017 recipient. It will go to former Walsh girls basketball coach Lance Turner, who passed away tragically in a traffic accident this past September. Lance will be honored prior to the 5:30pm game on Saturday. Oquist joined Ethan Denton and Jim Farmer on Monday’s “Anything Goes” program to reveal the bracket as well as let everyone know officially, that Turner would be the Melvin Hendrickson Award recipient this year.
You can listen to all 24 games of the tournament on 93.5 FM “The Curve”, with coverage beginning at 8:45am each day. Join Ethan Denton, Preston Alonzo, Dick Peecher and Bob Heist who will provide the play-by-play and commentary. See the brackets below!
